I was lucky enough to get some great shots of a young cooper's hawk last year, too. Doesn't look like you're suffering too much from not having the 800mm lens. You can use galvinized steel wire, or paint the trunks with a matching paint mixed with mason sand. The beavers don't like the gritty texture and will eat other foods. Its a hungry time out your way right now, and they'll back off the trees anyway when the weather turns.
